School of FISH swimming lessons for families.

School of FISH (Fun Instruction in our Swimming Holes) is offering low cost, beginner swim lessons for families with elementary and middle school aged children. School of FISH is offering discount pricing of $2 per lesson for a paired child and parent. Bring a voucher and your first session (of 10 classes) is free!

Beginning skills taught in these classes include water adjustment, bubble blowing, breath holding, kicking on front, back float and using a life jacket.

Lessons are available at three pools.

Helene Madison Pool, Sundays, Noon - 12:30 pm

Medgar Evers Pool, Saturdays, 3:30 - 4:00 pm

Rainier Beach Pool, Fridays, 5:30 - 6:00 pm

Little Maestro Series

The Little Maestro Series is a fun, interactive introduction to classical music for children age 0-6. Woodland Park Zoo’s Make a Splash for Penguins exhibit opens May 2, 2009!

It’s true. The new Humboldt penguin exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo is opening soon!

The exhibit will include 20 breeding pairs of Humboldt penguins with nesting areas where you can actually see penguin pairs raising their young. There will also be a children’s “splash zone” where the kiddos can play and be surprised by a sporadic splash of water through a “blowhole”. Learn more here at the Woodland Park Zoo’s website.

KidsQuest Children’s Museum

The KidsQuest Children’s Museum in the Factoria Mall is a great place for kids to explore. They have a special 0-3 year old area that is complete with an expansive train table, tree slide and lots of other age appropriate activities. There is also an interactive music exhibit, water play, life-size truck cab and much, much more.

On Tuesdays, they have a Story Time at 11 AM that is free to members.

Cedar River Watershed Spring Programs

The Cedar River Watershed has tons of great activities for people of all ages. Download the Program Guide (PDF).

Here is a small sampling of what they have to offer:

For toddlers, they have an activity for parents and tots to go on an interactive stroll called “Knee High Naturalists” several times during the spring and summer. The next stroll is May 13th from 9:30-10:30 AM. Cost $5 per tot.

Another very popular activity is “Batty About Bats” for children 8+ years and is known to fill up fast. They hold this fun activity at night around the campfire circle near the center.

“Family Friendly Birding”, for children 8+ years is another popular activity that is sure to fill up fast and is led by Woody Wheeler, Master Birder, Audubon, Saturday May 9 & 16 from 9-11AM.

The Museum of Flight ACE (Aerospace Camp Experience) Summer Day Camps for 1st Graders and Older

The Museum of Flight provides an excellent value day camp for children entering 1st grade through 9th grade. Camp sessions are one five-day week long, from 9:00 am to 4:oo pm. 1st grade camps start at only $365 for the five-day session. A variety of sessions are available, each with its own topic focus. If you have a little one that loves airplanes or shows a keen interest in how things work, this is a relatively inexpensive way to give their interests a boost.

Museum of Flight members get a $50 discount, which effectively pays for the membership.
